For a real, home cooked taste of the South, look no further than…Norwalk, Connecticut? Last year a small restaurant opened up at 195 Liberty Square (directly across from Veteran’s Park). After I read the article in another newspaper about the opening of A Taste of Charleston I knew it was something I had to check out.
A Taste of Charleston has all the food we think about when we imagine a home cooked Southern meal. Ribs (beef and baby back), pulled pork sandwiches, fried chicken, shrimp & grits, catfish, and one of my favorites, chicken fried steak.
I’ve made three trips to A Taste of Charleston since its opening and I have not been disappointed yet. I have already sampled the chicken fried steak obviously and I loved it but the fried chicken is to die for! Crispy, well seasoned, tender, everything fried chicken is supposed to be. At $15.95 you can’t go wrong. Plus, you get like half a chicken!
On my last visit I ordered the baby back ribs (pictured here) and there were well worth it. For $18.95 I got a full slab basted a delicious barbecue sauce (they also offer dry rubbed ribs) and they serve it with coleslaw and a side of your choice. They are fall-off-the-bone tender and I promise that you will not be able to stop until they’re gone and the bones are all that is left.
The prices at A Taste of Charleston keep me coming back as well.
Many Southern restaurants in the area charge too much money for what they call a chicken & rib combo when they give you two small pieces of chicken and like two ribs. Every entrée at Charleston comes with biscuits and cornbread for the table, a salad, veggies, and a side dish.
The owners are friendly and always seem to be at the restaurant which is a nice touch. Stop by and check this place out, you’ll fall in love with the food.
