Bar Americain

Ever since I became a Food Network fan I was probably a Bobby Flay fan. It is fair to say that I’ve been eagerly anticipating a meal at one of his many restaurants. So what took me so long? I only live in Norwalk, Connecticut which is not all that far from New York City where Flay has many restaurants including Bar Americain. I procrastinated. I kept saying that I would go but I never did until Bar Americain opened up at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Yes, NYC is closer but eating at my food idol’s new place was worth the hour and a half drive.

First off, Bar Americain is stunning. Perfect lighting, elegant but not stuffy décor, and the see through wine fridge added a nice touch to the dining room. You can also see right inside its big, clean kitchen after your eyes check out the raw bar. The raw bar contains local seafood with crab, shrimp, shellfish, and some of the biggest lobsters I have ever seen in my life.

I was torn when it came to the menu. Buttermilk fried chicken or a steak? When I think of Bobby Flay I think of grilled meat so the steak it was!

The spice-rubbed filet mignon was cooked to a perfect medium and I might have been able to slice it with my fork. The chef properly let the meat rest so the juices don’t go shooting all over the plate when you slice into it. Usually I would frown on using a sauce with my steak but you should make it a point to try Flay’s steak sauce they serve, spicy at first with a sweet finish. The fries Americain were well seasoned and were the perfect complement to my filet. The food was what I expected it to be at the restaurant of a celebrity chef; everything cooked to my liking and well seasoned.

Two other notes. The service was exceptional, maybe some of the best service at any restaurant in recent memory.

My only gripe was dessert. I ordered German chocolate cake. It was rich and the coconut shavings and coconut whipped cream were delicious. Was it good? Yes. But it was huge, too big to finish.

If you’ve ever wanted to eat at a celebrity chef’s restaurant and you happen to be at Mohegan Sun or in New York City go to a Bobby Flay restaurant and bring about $60-$80 for your meal. Don’t be cheap, if you want good food, you should expect to pay for it.

    Well I'm glad you asked! One thing I always like is when the waiter or waitress makes sure you have enough water and the “check on how you're doing and how the food is” thing. They did that. At Bar Americain they even come over to clean the crumbs off the table with some little device which I have never seen before. They were also friendly without seeming like they're sucking up for a better tip.

    Their whisky pecan pie is good for dessert. Brunch is amazing there but better at Mesa Grill. Blue corn waffles. . .
