Merry Christmas, Food Dudes Style!

This isn’t a review really, but more of a “look what we got?!” post. Without the brag, we just wanted to let all you food freaks out there know where we got some of the gifts we got for each other so you can share in the deliciousness.
Every year, Rob, Damion, and I exchange gifts and this year we went the food and beer route, mostly.
Not every gift will be listed, just the food stuffs.
This is what men buy each other for Christmas.
Damion bought us Bourbon Street Cajun Country Bacon and Western Bacon Jerky from a cool site called Bacon Freak. Unleash your inner freak! That’s totally not their slogan.
I, in turn bought him the same gift I got him last year…BACON. Well, mostly because his former roommate ate the Broadbent Bacon and Cherrywood Smoked Bacon I bought him last year. It made this year’s gift easy though. As for his ex-roomie, we killed him for eating the bacon.
Broadbent Bacon is from Kentucky and is hickory smoked but also dry cured and is one of the few remaining places that dry cure their bacon. The Cherrywood Bacon from Nueske’s in Wisconsin is smoked over cherrywood for 24 hours. I’ll be ordering this one for myself real soon.
Both bacons come from the magnificent food paradise that is Zingerman’s. Zingerman’s even features a Bacon of the Month Club that Chef Michael Symon chose on an episode of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” IF you didn’t know about Zingerman’s before, you know now. Thank me with a food gift!
The beer portion of the gift swap came in the form of bottled selections like Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold American Tripel Ale, Coney IslandFreaktoberfest, and Dogfish Head’s Miles Davis Bitches Brew.
Another cool beer gift was for Damion since he’s been into brewing beer at home lately, a Brooklyn Brewery Beer Making Kit.
The second to last stop on our Christmas spectacular was a visit to The Whelk in Westport for a nice meal. We went for the #1 dish on GQ’s “50 Best Things to Eat and Drink Right Now” (August 2013) list, the Green Goddess Deviled Eggs with fried oysters and pickled onions. We paired the best deviled eggs I’ve ever had with their Shoestring Fries with smoked mayo that I would like to eat with every meal, forever.

My meal at The Whelk…the best fried chicken sandwich ever. I had to conquer it because in the past, I had only had half a sandwich and needed the fulfillment of a whole. The chicken sandwich is two extra crunchy, well-seasoned, juicy chicken breasts that come topped with pimento cheese and pickles with cabbage coleslaw on the side.
We concluded the night with a trip to LUXE Modern Wine & Cocktails, which is maybe a three minute ride away, for a hand crafted, strong cocktail each. Since that meal concluded my Christmas shopping, and all the stress of dealing with the public was over, I chose a Sazerac to relax and reward myself. The drink, made expertly by Jeff Marron, of course. Go here. Do it.
I guess what this post was for was to give you a few tidbits of info, maybe even some last minute gift ideas. But what I’m really trying to say here is not the politically correct “Happy Holidays,” but…
Wishing you and your families and Very MERRY CHRISTMAS! Eat well, my friends 😉
