Walter’s Hot Dogs: A Taste of History

If there is one thing I love about New York, it’s the hot dogs. Everyone knows that New York is famous for the beef frank on a bun. Whether you have it grilled and topped with sauerkraut and sautéed onions, or just have a dog with mustard, there is something about the taste that we just love.

There is one place in Mamaroneck, NY that almost needs no introduction. Chances are, if you live in Westchester County, or you are just visiting and are in a mood for a good hot dog, you stumbled upon Walter’s Hotdogs in your search. Food Dudes is not the first to write a review of Walter’s Hot Dogs, and we will not be the last.

A brief history of Walter’s, is that it was established in 1919. Its current location, the Chinese pagoda building, was established in 1928. If you haven’t seen this place yet, you have to make it a priority to swing by. The look of this building is so unique for what it is. You wouldn’t think to get hotdogs from a Chinese pagoda, but perhaps this is just another reason why Walter’s has a line heading down the block. People flock from all over New York to see this fascinating eatery.

Walter’s hotdogs are a unique blend of beef, pork, and veal. They are split down the middle and grilled in their “secret sauce” and topped with their own mustard blend if you so desire. Choose otherwise and you would be missing out as this mustard blend has an incredible taste and I get it every time I am there. Walter’s serves the hotdogs up in a single or a double and offers sides such as French fries, curly fries, or potato puffs. My meal of choice? Hit me with a single, a double, and a side of those potato puffs. As you would have probably figured, the double is two hotdogs, split down the middle, stacked on top of each other. Someone decided to do this with burgers, why not a hotdog?

To describe the taste of these hotdogs grilled in the “secret sauce” and topped with that famous mustard would just be near impossible. Walter’s is the number one hot dog in New York for a reason. The taste is incredible and once you have one, you are going to want another, and another. They are just downright addicting. Standing in the long line is quite justifiable when you take a bite.

Depending on when you go, you might stand in a line that stretches down the block and across a neighboring driveway, or you can have a straight shot right to the window where you order. One thing is for sure, the hot dogs are worth it. The line moves pretty quickly though, so don’t be discouraged. Walter’s has more than just dogs and fries, they also have a variety of milkshakes made with their homemade ice cream. The hot dog stand is open all year around, accept for two days, Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. I think I know where I am getting my Christmas Eve dinner this year.

Walter’s has been around for almost a century and will be around for many years to come. The stand is a landmark and that in itself will draw crowds from all around. Walter’s hot dogs were on Westchester Magazine’s bucket list of things to do in Westchester, and I checked that one off several times already. I think I’m heading there now!
